Nachrichten richtig einordnen und interpretieren: Von 30.11. bis  4.12. bietet ein fjum-Workshop JournalistInnen ein interaktives Medientraining zum Thema „International News Literacy: Understanding the Others“ an. Anmeldungen sind bis 6.11. möglich, bis 30.10. kann man sich außerdem für ein Stipendium bewerben.

forum journalismus und medien wienInternational News Literacy: Understanding the Others (30.11.2015 – 04.12.2015) is an interactive media training, designed for gaining skills and knowledge that facilitate the comprehension of international events, including wars and crises. In order to understand the events, one needs to understand local contexts, visible and invisible nuances, popular perceptions and divergent realities.

What will you learn?
Better understanding of the international news coverage, based on the following skills:

  • Evaluating information sources: traditional media, social media, governments, NGOs, think tanks, user-generated content.
  • Improving the use of social media resources.
  • Analysing the elements that influence/determine international news coverage.
  • Identifying local perceptions that influence political developments.
  • Better comprehension of war reporting.
  • Handling media from different political systems.

The training is conducted in English and German.
Maximum number of participants: 12.

Target Groups: Young journalists and junior professionals interested in international political developments; full-time master, doctoral and postdoctoral students in communication and international relations.
Selected list of speakers/trainers: Hannes Swoboda (Austrian politician), Thomas Seifert (Wiener Zeitung, Austria, deputy editor-in-chief), Melita Sunjic (UNHCR, senior communication officer), Khaled Yacoub Oweis (Reuters, senior correspondent in Syria and the Middle East), Viola Raheb (Middle East expert, University of Vienna, Austria), Diana Kachalova (Novaya Gazeta, St. Petersburg, Russian Federation, editor-in-chief), Philippe Gélie (Le Figaro, France, deputy editorial director), Georg Hoffmann-Ostenhof (Profil, Austria, columnist), Jutta Sommerbauer (Die Presse, foreign desk, specializes in Eastern Europe) and others.

Scholarships: eight (8) full and partial scholarships are available. Registration deadline for scholarship applicants:  Friday, 30 October 2015.
Eligible for scholarships: freelance and full- time journalists working for the Austrian media, NGO communication specialists, full-time graduate students, and, in exceptional cases, scholarship can be granted based on other professional achievements in line with the workshop content.
Regular Fee: 1000€ for the five day workshop (from 9.30 to 17.00).  Registration deadline:  Friday, 6 November 2015.

What is a people without land?

Der neue Dokumentarfilm von Erwin Schweitzer, Kathrin Gradt und Martin Lintner erzählt vom langen Atem der Griqua, einer indigenen Gruppe in Südafrika, die für die Rückgabe des Landes ihrer Ahnen kämpft.

Viele SüdafrikanerInnen betrachten Land als Grundlage für ökonomische Entwicklung, kulturelle Entfaltung und selbstbestimmte Identität. Seit der Einführung der Demokratie in Südafrika 1994 können Menschen, deren Land durch Kolonialismus und Apartheid geraubt wurde, dieses wieder zurückfordern. Der Dokumentarfilm zeigt wie die Griqua, eine indigene Gruppe, die neuen rechtlichen Möglichkeiten nutzen, um für die Rückgabe des Landes ihrer Ahnen zu kämpfen. Anhand mehrerer Fallbeispiele in verschiedenen Regionen Südafrikas illustriert der Film die starke emotionale Bindung einzelner Griqua an ihr Land. Gleichzeitig verdeutlichen diese Fälle den Zusammenhang zwischen Landrechten und der Ausübung der eigenen Kultur, entwicklungspolitischer Themen, Bildung, Einkommensmöglichkeiten sowie Spiritualität.

Eine Veranstaltung von SADOCC in Kooperation mit dem Ethnocineca Filmklub und dem Österreichischen Museum für Volkskunde im Rahmen des Europäischen Jahres für Entwicklung 2015.
